Privacy Policy

Last Updated: 14 February 2025

Cliterature.app is a book discovery platform operated from New Zealand under the Privacy Act 2020. This policy explains how we handle your personal information in plain language.

Personal Information We Collect

The only personally identifying information we collect is your email address (for authentication and transactional emails) and your chosen username (only visible to friends if you choose to share it).

We also store non-identifying metadata to run the service — such as reading preferences, reviews, tag votes, country, and age confirmation. This data cannot identify you on its own and exists solely to power recommendations and community features.

We do not collect your real name, date of birth, physical address, payment details, or use any analytics or advertising trackers.

What Others Can See

Your username is only visible to friends you choose to connect with. Reviews are visible on book pages but can be posted anonymously. Everything else — your email, reading preferences, taste notes, hard-no list, reading list, and country — is never visible to other users.

Third Parties

We don't sell or trade your information. We may disclose information if required by New Zealand law or a court order.

Cookies

We use only functional cookies to keep you signed in and display the correct interface. No tracking or advertising cookies are used.

Your Rights

Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can ask us to show you what data we hold, correct it, or delete your account. You can update your preferences and profile details yourself in account settings at any time.

If you delete your account, your personal data is removed within 30 days. Reviews are anonymised rather than deleted, as they form part of community aggregate scores.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled a request, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

Under 18

Cliterature.app is for adults only. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has created an account, please contact us and we will remove it.
